Socialisation Is More Than Meeting Other Dogs

PUPPY DEVELOPMENT • TRAINING INSIGHTS

Why positive experiences matter more than the number of interactions a dog has.

Socialisation is often described as letting a puppy meet as many dogs and people as possible. In practice, healthy early development involves much more than the number of greetings a puppy experiences.

Puppies are learning about different environments, sounds, surfaces, people, animals and everyday events. The quality of those experiences matters. Exposure that is overwhelming or frightening may not produce the confidence owners hoped to encourage.

Being comfortable in the presence of another dog does not require direct interaction. For many dogs, the ability to notice others without feeling compelled to approach is a valuable part of everyday life.

The early socialisation period is important, but positive learning continues as dogs mature. Experiences should be appropriate for the individual, with attention to their confidence, wellbeing and signs of discomfort. The aim is not indiscriminate sociability; it is helping dogs feel secure in the world they share with us.
