Why Environment Matters in Dog Behaviour

BEHAVIOUR SCIENCE • TRAINING INSIGHTS

How surroundings and access to experiences influence the behaviour we observe.

Behaviour does not occur in isolation. What happens immediately before and after an action can influence whether it appears again, while broader factors such as health, previous experiences and emotional state also play a role.

For example, a dog who repeatedly rushes towards a window may be responding to movement outdoors, while a dog who struggles to settle in a busy room may be affected by noise, activity or limited opportunities to rest.

These behaviours cannot be understood fully by looking only at what the dog does. Considering the surrounding conditions can help identify what may be maintaining a behaviour and which situations are particularly challenging.

Changing an environment is not an admission that training has failed. Sensible management can protect welfare, reduce unnecessary rehearsal of unwanted behaviour and create better conditions for learning. The most appropriate approach depends on the dog and the cause of the behaviour.
